A gentle introduction

To be successful in today’s competitive Web and Application development environment a working knowledge of Java is desirable if not essential. This short course is designed as an introduction to the Java programming language fundamentals and the rich and powerful set of tools for developing programs that may be run from the internet or within the safety of a web-browser. Java is Object Oriented and is said to be “the” programming language for software development.
What will you learn?
The course will cover the following topics through short lectures and a number of workshops:
• The internet, applets, HTML and security.
• The concepts of Class, Object, Attributes and Methods.
• An introduction to object orientated design.
• The syntax of Java.
• Obtaining and using the Java compiler and Java runtimes.
• Developing sample Java programs.
• The main method: Java applets compared with Java applications. • Develop simple applets and converting an applet into an application.
• More Java such as creating GUI’s using Swing and the AWT.

This course would be ideal for individuals that wish to learn to program in and understand Java and object orientation. This may be useful for developing projects for small businesses, personal projects or just gain confidence to pursue programming employment opportunities.
